Why Everyone Should Be Angry About Factory Farming ~ Anajali Sareen, Huff-Po

Often times I am asked, why vegan?  This is a tricky question because most people don’t want to know about the dark side of agriculture, especially Big Aggra.  Most people don’t want to hear about the systemic abuse of cows, pigs, chickens and turkeys.  More often than not, if I even hint about this topic, I get the hand followed by, “I don’t want know?”  Not wanting to completely scare people off, I’ll down shift into the health benefits of a vegan diet. It would seem, more people care about the health benefits than the the fact they would be sparing lives that is to say, the lives of animals.

I work in an office and find it incredibly amusing when someone will bring in doughnuts from some artisan  shop located in one of our urban-artsy, slightly left-of-center-neighborhoods and my office mates will throw up their arms in protest complaining about the evils of doughnuts.   Really? Let me get this straight, you’ll eat so-called “organic free-range” egg (when nothing could be further from the truth) from an abused hen.  You’ll eat veal, which is an abused, neglected, male dairy calf (and byproduct of the dairy industry). You will eat hamburger which is ground-up “spent” dairy cows but you won’t eat a doughnut?  I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, “Organic” “Free-Range” “Grass-Fed” DOES NOT MEAN THESE ANIMALS LIVED A HAPPY LIFE BEFORE BEING SENT TO SLAUGHTER! Do your own research. There are many many sources that reveal this labeling is nothing more than that, labeling to dupe you the unsuspecting all trusting consumer into believing the milk you are drinking came from a happy cow, who frolicked in the California sun when in reality, that animal never set foot outside (except for when it was sent to slaughter) and was never allowed to bond or raise her young which is stolen from her so you can pour milk or cream in your coffee, milk on your cereal, eat cheese, yogurt and lastly,  ice cream.

My feeling is simply this: EAT THE DOUGHNUT. You clearly do not care about your health if you’re consuming dairy, organic or otherwise, bacon, eggs, chicken and ground up cows. All of these animals are exploited, and none of them lived a good life before being slaughtered.

People say they don’t want to know or care. Well you know what, you should know and you should care because vegan or not, you’re eating this stuff and you’re feeding it to your kids. If you think the Ag-Gag laws are nothing more than a means to shut up us crazy “terrorist” animal rights activists, think again.  Those laws will prevent ANYONE from looking under the hood. It also means, the inmates will be running the asylum, you know, self-regulating? Do you want the factory farm industry to self-regulate? Really? Fine. Go ahead, turn a deaf ear to the Ag-Gag laws and when and if you, your child or someone closed to you becomes sick from *e-Coli, you’ll have no one to blame but yourself.

One thing we should all be able to agree upon, however, is that factory farming isn’t good for anyone. Large-scale, industrialized animal agriculture is bad for the animalsbad for us and bad for the environment. It wreaks havoc upon worker wellness and human health and is inefficient from a world hunger perspective.

The animal agriculture industry is attempting to push bills across the nation that would make it harder for citizens to see what takes place inside factory farms. Once we’re no longer able to see inside these farms, it will be that much more difficult to change our broken system.

With our food system the way it currently is, there are many reasons to be angry about industrialized animal agriculture.

If you eating animals with nary a care for how they lived (and died) then clearly you do. not. care. So like I said,  eat the doughnut and don’t forget to chase it with a glass of milk.

*Whole Foods sold fish so toxic in mercury that one customer’s blood levels had to be reported to the Center for Disease Control. (17)  Whole Foods didn’t start identifying potentially mercury-laden fish in its California stores until the government forced them to do so.  Even then, a quarter of Whole Foods stores failed to display proper signage as required by law. (18) 

In 2008, five people had to be hospitalized after eating E.coli-contaminated beef from Whole Foods.  The beef was sold even after it was supposed to have been recalled. (22)  Others were sickened by bad milk from Whole Foods, resulting in “hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical expenses…. Need a New Year’s Resolution – How about going Vegan!

It’s Quarter-end at work and I have been up to my eyeballs in fund reviews.  But that’s not why I’m writing.

Since Christmas, I have been reading the blogs that I follow and almost everyone has either written a 2012 recap or written about their future goals/resolutions for 2013.  A good percentage of the blogs I follow are fellow vegans; however, some are not and hey that is their choice, I’m not passing judgment here; well at least I’m trying not to.


Every morning my routine involves catching up on the news feeds about animal cruelty stories.  These stories encompass all animals from family pets to animals raised for consumption or bred for fur.  I also ride the Commuter Rail in/out of the city five days a week and almost every day I encounter some level of rudeness from people (natch!); although, generally I brush it off.  With that said, do you want to know what really goes up my ass 90 MPH?  When I overhear conversations from these so-called “Foodies” who discuss the food they either prepared or ate at a restaurant. I especially grow annoyed when I overhear someone blather on about their grass-fed beef, the free-range chicken and their “organic” cheese.  In the past, I have posted about these food labels; however, allow me to rant about those labels here as a refresher: Grass-Fed, Free-Range and Organic Meat Labels DO NOT MEAN A DAMN THING!!! Their sole purpose is to ease consumer guilt.  When people hear: Free-Range Chicken, they assume the chicken spent it’s life running around a farm, taking dirt baths (which is a natural instinct), and basking in the sun.  The same applies to “grass-fed beef”. I’m sure most people conjure up thoughts of cows basking in a field, rubbing up against fence posts, receiving daily back rubs from their local farmers while nibbling on fresh grass — when nothing could be farther from the truth – their entire lives have been spent indoors – no fresh air, no blue skies, no sun on their backs, nada!   Oh and don’t even get me started on those stupid dairy cow commercials on TV showing happy cows as members of someone’s family, taking showers, and playing board games.  Yah, I bet all the dairy cows suffering right now as I type this post would love a life like that.  Folks, these labels ease your guilt while the animals suffer until they land on your plate, in your glass or on your pizza – trust me on this.  If you need further proof or documentation I suggest navigating to: http://freefromharm.org

As for pigs, well, when was the last time you heard: “Free-Range Pig”? Or “Grass-Fed Pig?”  You haven’t right? No, neither have I.  Pigs endure such horrible abuse that it cuts me straight through to my core.  I’m not saying or even implying that the abuse pigs endure trumps the abuse of all other animals, but it’s hard to watch sows imprisoned in gestation crates their entire lives (which is up to 4 years).   I have always had a thing for pigs and I don’t know why that is. I mean I love all animals, but pigs hold a special place in my heart.  Maybe my connection to them stems from some ability to see their intelligence.  I honestly don’t know…

In conclusion, the reason I am a vegan is because I cannot subscribe to the abuse farm animals endure – whether these animals are bred on small farms or raised in a factory – the abuse is the same as is the way they are slaughtered. I can no more fathom eating my cat (and in some countries, people do!), than I can eat a cow, pig, steer, chicken, turkey, et al.  All animals have feelings; form bonds; and feel pain.  If you are justifying your animal consumption by declaring that you only eat: Grass-Fed or Free Range, well then you are deluding yourself and trying to justify your position.  IMHO, if you want to continue eating animals and consuming dairy then it is your moral imperative to watch Earthlings  If you can sit through the entire movie, well then maybe you should have your pulse checked to see if you are still alive. Better yet, have your psyche checked to see if you are human because I absolutely could NOT sit through this entire movie and I don’t see how any animal lover could. 

Before I close this post, I hope you will consider going Vegan.  If you can work up the courage to watch Earthlings, I thank you. If not, perhaps you could watch this short video that shows egregious abuse taking place inside a factory farm as well as a so-called “organic” farm. The video shows abuse to: pigs, cows, chickens as well a fish. I hope you’ll watch.

Nicholas: The Story of a Rescued Steer, Casualty of the Dairy Industry

Nicholas is a five-year-old steer rescued by Animal Place last Christmas day. He was found at only one day old, tied up outside an apartment complex with no food or water. Lucky for him, he is living out his life at the sanctuary. Male dairy calves have little value to dairy farmers. They don’t produce milk. Watch this informative and inspiring video featuring Marji Beach, Education Manager at Animal Place explaining the story of Nicholas.

A picture is worth a thousand words…

Take a look at this female pig, trapped in a gestational crate, unable to turn, move, breathe fresh air or feel the sun on her back — living out her miserable life in a factory farm  Tell me you cannot feel her pain and sadness just by looking at her in this photo.

Oh and btw, gestational crates are the equivalent to being strapped into an airline chair for your entire life… noodle on that the next time you board a plane.  This is what life is like for sows in factory farms.  

Now look at this picture of a rescued pig living her life on a farm sanctuary. Can you see the difference?  It’s pretty obvious isn’t it.
