While waiting to pick up a friend at the airport in Portland, Oregon, I had one of those life-changing experiences that you hear other people talk about — the kind that sneaks up on you unexpectedly. This one occurred a mere two feet away from me.

Straining to locate my friend among the passengers deplaning through the jet way, I noticed a man coming toward me carrying two light bags. He stopped right next to me to greet his family.

First he motioned to his youngest son (maybe six years old) as he laid down his bags. They gave each other a long, loving hug. As they separated enough to look in each other’s face, I heard the father say, “It’s so good to see you, son. A new initiative by vegan blogger Holly Piggot is getting a lot of media attention over the past 48 hours after she announced a plan to count international vegans and map out demographics of the cruelty-free society that exists in today’s world. Dubbed the “Big Count Survey,” Piggot hopes to get information on vegans worldwide in order to help deliver better statistics.

While the survey is in no way scientific or all-inclusive, it is a great initiative that will help do some mapping out of where vegans, especially those active online, live and work.

Now, Piggot, the creator of @TheAllAnimalVegan blog is attempting to track international vegan statistics through her online survey The Big Count.

Third Fur Farm Raid in One Month: 2,000 Mink Released in Illinois

Local media is reporting 2,000 mink were released on August 14th from a fur farm in Morris, Illinois. Police state they received a call at 5am on August 14th from the farm owned by Bob Dodeghero. 2,000 mink had been released, two trucks had been doused with paint stripper, and a barn had been spray painted with “Liberation is love.”

The farm is one of the smallest mink farms in the country. A farm of its size (as shown in the photo below) is typical of a farm that can hold somewhere in the range of 2,000 animals, making it likely that every animal was freed.

This is the 6th major US action of the summer, which has seen a horse slaughterhouse arson, two releases of birds from game farms, and three releases of animals from fur farms.

“A Lotus Grows in the Mud” – Goldie Hawn

Today, as I read through my WordPress Reader Feed, I saw Deo’s post: “Favorite Inspirational Quote on Perseverance by Goldie Hawn”  As I read the first quote, I was reminded of a book I had read back in 2006 by Goldie entitled A Lotus Grows in the Mud.  I had read her book during a very dark time in my life  and I have to say, reading about her life’s journey as well as her ability to stand in the face of adversity while holding her head high,  gave me much hope and inspiration.  Towards the end of the book, Goldie explains the title of her book, which is essentially what is written below.  If you haven’t read her book, I highly recommend you pick up a copy and no, you cannot have mine.

“Killer” thinks I’m an alcoholic! LMFAO!!!!!

I love it when hunters stop by my blog to let me know how much they hate me because I am the voice of the voiceless.  “Killer”, as he (or she) likes to refer to himself is a hunter — he is pro-killing of animals.  He (or she) likes to lurk and comment on a fellow bloggers site:  Exposing the Big Game.   Evidently, “Killer” thinks I am an alcoholic. LMFAO!!!!   I am not really sure how Killer surmised I am an alcoholic.  I guess he just didn’t get that the reason I am in therapy is because I was married to a pathological lying, cheating, narcissist — but no matter.  It’s all good.  I love it when hunters sling insults at me because it let’s me know I am getting to them.

This is what Killer had to say. Now I know I shouldn’t feed the Trolls but this is just too good to not share with my fellow animal rights bloggers.

Cows Overjoyed to See Grass

This video was posted on Youtube by a small family run dairy farm in Gloucestershire, England. These cows are so excited to be let out of their holding after a long winter that they literally frolic out into the pasture. This should an insight that animals feel the same stress of being pent-up as we do. For those who consume dairy or beef, please conscientious of where your produce comes from, how the cows have been cared for, whether they are in confines, the amount of produce they are forced to create, and their general welfare.

HELENA, Mont. (AP) — Environmentalists upset with a federal proposal to remove protections for wolves across most of the U.S. have posted a manual on how to disrupt wolf hunts and sabotage traps.

The 12-page manual published online Monday by Earth First! tells would-be saboteurs that Internet activism alone can leave activists with an empty feeling, so “why not try direct action?”

The manual instructs how to find traps and take them out by destroying or hiding them. It also instructs how to release a trapped wolf, noting that doing so is very dangerous, and suggests forming blockades where wolf permits are sold and walking ahead of hunters with air horns.

They encroach on natural habitats, kill wildlife and destroy native landscapes.

While this is, in many ways, the modus operendi of human populations, it is the excuse now being given by the US Fish and Wildlife Services (FWS) in its call on the federal government to remove the gray wolf from endangered species lists. All for the purpose of using human “ingenuity” (read: guns) to help reduce the population to a more “manageable” level.

Activists are beginning to take to the social media networks in calling for the government to not slaughter wolves. One petition, began last week, has already garnered several thousand signatures en route to its 10,000 goal.
