Japan has continued to send its ships to the Antarctic in the autumn or winter each year to catch whales by the hundreds. To prevent the killings, the anti-whaling group Sea Shepherd has been chasing and harassing the Japanese whale fleet in the frigid southern waters for years.

San Francisco, Monday–a judge of the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling against Sea Shepherds clearing the way for Japan whaling interests to launch more extensive legal action against the group.

“When you ram ships, hurl glass containers of acid, drag metal-reinforced ropes in the water to damage propellers and rudders, launch smoke bombs and flares with hooks; and point high-powered lasers at other ships, you are, without a doubt, a pirate,” the judge said. “The activities that Cetacean [the Japanese whalers] alleges Sea Shepherd…

Did anyone watch Part One of Makers: Women Who Make America?

[Caps Lock] OMG it was freakin’ AWESOME!

Part One was about… well… in a nutshell the birth of the women’s movement.   These women (from the Suffragettes to Friedan, Steinem, et al.)  paved the path for up and coming generations of women. I had known about some of their struggles (after all, who hasn’t read the Feminine Mystique?) but I had NO IDEA just how hard the struggle for equality was.  Jesus! I am ever so grateful to these women.

According to USDA records, he uses the export pens at Santa Teresa directly across the border from Ciudad Juarez to transship close to 10,000 horses each year to Mexican slaughter plants. Some of the plants still slaughter horses with the inhumane Puntilla knife method, a barbaric practice that leaves the horse fully conscious during the slaughter process.

The investigation was triggered by numerous complaints Animals’ Angels received about the treatment of the animals at the feedlot. Photographs & reports received from an anonymous source showed multiple incidents of inadequate care & extremely emaciated horses.

Off~Topic: My Latest Vintage Purchase

Howdy GE  followers!

As I’ve mentioned before, every once in a while I like to stray from topic and show off my recent vintage purchases. Oh and let me just state for the record that it has been a while since I have made any so suffice it to say, I was long overdue, mkay?

Feast your eyes on this 1950s Shirtwaist Dress.  To say I am longing for the quick arrival of spring/summer just so I can wear this, would be a major effing understatement.

Also, I have let my pixie haircut grow longer…because…well, it’s winter,  dammit and sometimes a girl needs a bit more hair for warmth!  So in addition to waiting with anticipation to wear the above dress, I am also eager to chop off my hair  Jane Seberg Style.

And yet another reason to go vegan ~ FDA has approved growth hormones for Salmon

The federal Food and Drug Administration is on track to approve AquaBounty AquaAdvantave transgentic salmon – the first genetically engineered animal intended as food for humans. This new hybrid salmon will combine DNA from Atlantic salmon, Chinook salmon and the eel-like ocean pout. There’s no proof that eating these genetically engineered salmon is safe. What we do know is the fish will produce enough growth hormones year-round to grow at twice their natural rate.

So which salmon will you be buying in the supermarket – salmon from nature or from a lab? You won’t know!

EWG is fighting for your right to know what you are eating and feeding your family, but we need your help. The FDA is accepting public comments. We need you to take action today and demand that the FDA fully review and label genetically engineered salmon…

Hi Folks,

I know most of you do not care for the types of things I blog about (i.e. Animal Rights/Animal Abuse). And for those of you who do *follow me* I am sure some of you probably roll your eyes (a bit) when you see a new animal rights post appear in the *Reader* from me.  I realize most of you “don’t want to know” what really goes on inside a factory farm, a so-called “organic farm”, a dairy farm or a slaughterhouse —  I get it. A long time ago, I was where you are today – I didn’t want to know either; but a few years ago, I realized, I had to know because I couldn’t call myself an “activist” and “the voice of the voiceless” if I didn’t.  I have subjected myself to some of the most painful-to-watch undercover video footage you can imagine (maybe you can’t imagine) and by doing so, I am able to educate people on why choosing a vegan lifestyle  is kindest choice a person can make.

Now, with that said, I am not asking you to become a vegan, I’d like to, but I’m not going to.  What I do ask of you, you the few who follow me is to please watch this video by Gary Yourofsky who is speaking to a group of college students.    There is no blood, no gore, no scared-straight tactics. This video is just Gary talking about why he’s a vegan and an animal rights activists.  The video is over an hour long, with a Q&A session at the end. So grab yourself a cup of coffee with vegan So-Delicious creamer, get comfortable and please, please, please watch.

Beyonce, The Narcissist

Barbara Lippert is one of my favorite bloggers.  During Mad Men seasons, I eagerly await her posts about each episode.  Off-Mad Men Season, Barbara blogs about all things media.  Yesterday, Barb blogged about Beyonce’s HBO Documentary “Life is but a Dream”  

To be blunt, I don’t give a rat’s fuzzy a-hole about Beyonce.   I didn’t see her Super Bowl performance, however, I heard she wore various dead animals on her back.  One would think, at her level, living in the public eye, she would have made more mindful (and kinder) clothing choices.  Then again, thanks to  Paula’s Pontifications, I have learned that Narcissists rarely think outside themselves or own their mistakes. Furthermore,  [I am about to make a grand inference here]  I would bet Beyonce could give a flying F(!) that animals suffered so she could wear their skin while shaking her fat ass on stage in front of millions (???) of Super Bowl viewers. I am also quit certain that her child will be raised in the same narcissistic, me-me-me mindset.  I mean hey, correct me if I am wrong but generally speaking, the apple rarely falls far from the tree.

But I digress…

Right up front, one of the problems with Beyonce’s HBO documentary “Life is but a Dream” is that it’s called a documentary. Because no matter how compelling a public figure and glam superstar you are, talking close into your MacBook with your-unmade-up (but still flawless) face does not a documentary make.

Granted, the former Ms. Fierce produced and co-directed the film, so it’s not as if we were set up for a Ken Burns special. (Although both docu-makers have sported bangs, at times.)

Still, Beyonce is beautiful, talented, and one of the most powerful people in the biz — a natural subject. But if you watch this 90-minute film because you actually are interested in how that happened — stuff like where Beyonce was born, how she got along in school and with her siblings, whether she studied music, where she got her big break, how she met Jay-Z,  what informs her musical tastes etc. — you’re out of luck. I guess that’s what Wikipedia is for.

When the infants are about one year old, they are killed and their brains dissected.

If this sounds like something out of the middle ages, you would be wrong. It is the latest in a long line of similar experiments being conducted at the University of Wisconsin.

The Perils of Palm Oil

How do Nutella, Velveeta, and Colgate toothpaste spell death for elephants and orangutans? They all contain the ingredient palm oil.

Palm oil is derived from the fruit of African oil palm trees. It is utilized in over 50% of todays products on the market. To keep up with the demand, thousands of kilometres of pristine rainforest are slashed and burned in order to make way for more oil palm plantations, almost all of which is produced in, and exported from, Indonesia and Malaysia.

One of the largest worldwide palm oil companies is Wilmar International. They have done illegal logging and set up new plantations, driving peasants off their land as well as finding new subsidiaries and bribing officials to side step the law.

The good news is-we CAN stop this. By being conscientious of  the things we buy, we can send a message to the palm oil companies that we do not want to be willing participants…

Blizzards, Braces, Amaryllis & Random What Not

Hey GE Followers,

I thought I’d take a step down off my animal rights soap box and blog about a few random topics, well maybe more than a few.

Let’s talk Blizzard. MmmmHmmmm, I had much-o fun-o digging out from the blizzard of 2013, not! Below are some photos of my back door and my truck. The only way I could leave my home was via the front door. Then I had to walk through 3 feet of snow in order to dig out my back door, clear my walkway and eventually dig out my truck.   I still cannot feel the right side of my body. I mean, I can see it, so I know it’s there, but suffice it to say it’s numb.  I lost track of how many hours I spent Saturday and Sunday digging out but I am ever so grateful for Howie and his plow.  Despite protests with SMA during the home purchase process, he was indeed correct when he said, “That driveway is too big to shovel. You’re going to need a snow blower.”  Damn! I hate it when he’s right. Speaking of snow blowers, have you seen the prices for a decent one with a bit of muscle? Jee-ZUS!  I’m about ready to hold up a Home Deeps (Depot) Thelma & Louise-style. I don’t even want or need the cash in the register, just give me the merchandise.

The hold up (or is it a stick up?) would go down something like this:

Me:  “Good morning everybody.  This is a robbery. Now if nobody loses their head, nobody will lose their head.  Simon says everybody lay down on the floor, right away, right away, except you sir.  You’ll have a story to tell your friends, that or a tag on your toe, it’s your decision.  Now you take a big shopping cart and place the following items: Leaf Blower, Weed Whacker, Chainsaw (hey, every girl should have one), a couple of shovels, a hose and… well while I’m at it, how about some fencing, a new Lawnmower and that $900+ snow blower you’ve got chained up over there?”

Home Deeps Clerk: “Yes Ma’am”

Me: “Let’s see who wins a prize for keeping their cool. Now you sir, lay back down, thank you.   Oh and hey, if you wouldn’t mind, throw in a couple of cans of concrete paint while you’re at it.”

Store Clerk:  “Sure Ma’am”

Me:  “Thank you, now everybody just stay down on the floor until I leave.  Thank you for your cooperation and have a good day.”

And then I drive off into the sunset in my Dodge Ram.   🙂

Soooooooooooo guess what I got yesterday? Give up? Braces! Totally stoked about it too.  I have wanted braces for so damn long.  You don’t even know. You don’t, trust me?  Of course, at the moment, the inside of my mouth and lips feel as though they are rubbing up against 220 grit sandpaper.  I have been told this “feeling will take some getting used to”.  I am also having trouble eating. Normally I’d say this is a good thing but the constant nagging hunger is a real distraction (besides I’m already down 6 lbs from giving up oil and as a result my clothes are hanging off of me).  I think until I become used to these here braces, I will be living on vegan protein drinks and Somer’s Green Smoothies.  Sunday afternoon, I had made two different soups for my weekly meals, without taking into account that my mouth might be sore.  Both soups are chalk-full of veggies which means every spoonful results in vegetable shrapnel lodging between the brackets and the wire which is a total pain in the ass.  This stuff cannot be sucked or swished out. It requires a tooth-brush and pick axe.  Hmmmmmm, maybe I should consider pureeing these soups with the immersion blender?  [Sigh]  I am going to have to re-think my food shopping selections.  I just hope I don’t lose sight of the fact that all this upfront suffering will lead to positive happy results in the end…of…TWO…freakin’… YEARS! Gulp! Today at work we have been tossing around potential nicknames for me. I’m kind of digging “grill”.

Moving on… Check out my Amaryllis.  Aint it perty? I know NittyGrittyDirtMan will appreciate the bloomage. Right Nitty? 🙂

I thought y’all might appreciate the follow tidbits of in-for-mas-e-on:

To all my fellow vegans.  Let me tell you, Daiya Cheddar Wedge  is the F*ing BOMB!  Over the weekend, I made a grilled *cheese* sandwich with the Daiya Wedge on Ezekiel Bread with sauerkraut and it was so flipping good I seriously considered licking the plate.  I kid you not.

Also, I am completely and utterly addicted to Peanut Butter & Co Dark Chocolate Dreams. And yes, it is vegan. I literally eat spoonfuls of this stuff straight from the jar like an honest to goodness chocoholic. No judgment, mkay?

I am also addicted to Dexter.  Currently, I am enmeshed in Season 2 and loving every bit of it.  A serial killer who kills criminals? Who knew? I think statues should be erected in Dexter’s honor.  I’ve always agreed with George Carlin. Everyone should be allowed to kill 2 people in their lifetime – with sufficient justification of course. At least, I think that’s what he said.

Electronic receipts contain Bisphenol A (BPA)  which is a hormone-disrupting chemical. Be sure to wash your hands after handling receipts

And lastly, be sure to rinse your recycling.  Items that have food or film on them can be recycled but it’s important to know that recycling systems sill involve human sorting, and stinky, nasty containers are disgusting and inconsiderate.  I keep a special barrel just for my recycling under the counter next to my sink.  After I rinse an item, I just toss it into bucket (ex, cat food cans).  And when the bucket is full, I empty it into my curb-side recycle bin.  Done and done.

Carnism

What Is Carnism?

Carnism is the invisible belief system, or ideology, that conditions people to eat certain animals. Carnism is essentially the opposite of veganism; “carn” means “flesh” or “of the flesh” and “ism” denotes a belief system. Most people view eating animals as a given, rather than a choice; in meat-eating cultures around the world people typically don’t think about why they find the flesh of some animals disgusting and the flesh of other animals appetizing, or why they eat any animals at all. But when eating animals is not a necessity for survival, as is the case in much of the world today, it is a choice – and choices always stem from beliefs.

The fire chief defends the fundraiser by characterizing it as a “family event,” that the squirrels are “in season,” and that the squirrels don’t go to waste because they are eaten.

Got Milk? How about an Abused Dairy Cow Instead?

Sorry for the Napalm of posts today but sometimes, shit just has to be said.

Folks, the next time you pour cream in your coffee; a glass of milk for your child; smear butter on your toast;  order a double cheese pizza; mix blueberries into your Greek yogurt; take your kids out for ice cream;  take that first bite of cheese cake; or break the sugar shell on your Creme Brulee’ I want you to think about these dairy cows and the miserable abuse they endured so you can enjoy their puss-infused milk that was intended for their babies —  babies these mother cows were never allowed to nuzzle or bond with because the calves were immediately taken from them.  Female calves are destined to the lives of their mothers. Males calves (the by-product of the dairy industry) are either bludgeoned to death or left to starve – ALL SO YOU CAN ENJOY THE MYRIAD OF DAIRY PRODUCTS THAT EXIST IN YOUR SUPERMARKET. 

Below is an undercover video by Mercy for Animals documenting egregious abuse taking place on an Ohio Dairy Farm.  It makes me wonder how many other cows are suffering right now from similar or worse abuse SO THAT HUMANS CAN ENJOY THEIR MILK! 

The next time you see an Ad or TV commercial for ‘Got Milk?’ or so-called “Happy California Cows”, think of these cows. 

 

 

On September 24, 2010, Billy Joe Gregg, Jr., a worker at Conklin Dairy Farms caught on hidden camera during a Mercy For Animals investigation maliciously abusing cows and calves, pleaded guilty to six misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals.

Gregg was sentenced to eight months in jail, ordered to pay a $1,000 fine, and is barred from contact with animals for three years. Gregg must also receive counseling through a program that specializes in treating individuals involved in animal abuse cases.

Gregg’s arrest and conviction stem from chilling undercover footage recorded during a Mercy For Animals investigation earlier this year at Conklin Dairy Farms in Plain City, Ohio.

During a four-week investigation in April and May, MFA’s investigator documented farm workers:

• Violently punching young calves in the face, body slamming them to the ground, and pulling and throwing them by their ears
• Routinely using pitchforks to stab cows in the face, legs and stomach
• Kicking “downed” cows (those too injured to stand) in the face and neck – abuse carried out and encouraged by the farm’s owner
• Maliciously beating restrained cows in the face with crowbars – some attacks involving over 40 blows to the head
• Twisting cows’ tails until the bones snapped
• Punching cows’ udders
• Bragging about stabbing, dragging, shooting, breaking bones, and beating cows and calves to death

After viewing the footage, Dr. Bernard Rollin, Distinguished Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University, stated: “”This is probably the most gratuitous, sustained, sadistic animal abuse I have ever seen. The video depicts calculated, deliberate cruelty, based not on momentary rage but on taking pleasure through causing pain to cows and calves who are defenseless.””

Sadly, cruelty to farmed animals in Ohio – no matter how egregious – is classified as a mere misdemeanor. Ohio has some of the weakest animal protection laws in the nation – ranking 43rd out of all 50 states.

HSUS New Egg Exposé: The Reality Behind Modern Egg Production

This is a video produced by an HSUS undercover investigation conducted in February and March of 2012 at a Manheim, Pa., egg factory owned by Kreider Farms. Of the nation’s 280 million egg-laying hens, Kreider cages approximately 7 million at its four Pennsylvania facilities, located in Manheim, Mt. Joy, Middleton, and Lebanon. Pennsylvania is the nation’s third largest egg-producing state.

If you want to help hens, don’t purchase eggs and don’t support campaigns like the proposed battery cage ban (H.R. 3798, the Egg Products Inspection Act Amendments of 2012), that will doom birds to cages for decades to come with no opportunities to change the laws. Birds do not belong in cages… period. If you want to help, share the video and educate others why we should not be buying eggs and allowing birds to be exploited for their eggs.

Karen Davis, president of United Poultry Concerns, summarizes well why we should not support the alleged battery cage ban for egg laying hens in the following:

“It is incorrect to say that the proposed federal legislation would eliminate battery cages. Batteries consist of rows and tiers of identical units; in this case the units are cages. The proposed legislation will enshrine battery cages, not eliminate them. Egg-laying hens will be locked inside windowless buildings, crammed in cages stacked from the floor and lined up in long rows, just as they are now. Tiny furnishings, including plastic strips, falsely called “nests,” are being prettified as “colonies” and “enrichments.” This vocabulary makes people feel good, but it is bad for birds whose legs and wings are designed to run, walk, perch and be physically active, not rot in cages.
